Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP) celebrated the Soft Opening of their 1.7 mile road course this past weekend, June 6-8, thanks to the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). The event marked the first time that race cars put wheels down on the new pavement of the road course, and there were smiles all around as racers welcomed having another track to race on in the New England region.
TSMP has a rich history of racing in this area, especially in conjunction with the SCCA that held some of its first events at Thompson Speedway’s road course in the early fifties. There have been three different configurations of the road course throughout its history, and the re-opening this year will mark the fourth version of the course. In many ways, it is similar to the last version of Thompson’s road course that closed down in the mid-seventies, with some important changes made to keep up with improved safety standards.
Other than a single turtle casualty (whose sacrifice was commemorated on the car that led to its demise), the weekend was deemed a huge success by those who attended. As the purpose of the weekend was to test out the safety of the new track, the races were only for practice and there were no points awarded.
Greg Amy, who drove an STL Acura Integra at the event, had the following to say:
“Good club facility, open-minded and interested track management. We had a lot of good suggestions that will be seriously considered. I think we will enjoy being at this track. From a driving perspective, [it] flows nice when you have open track. It has a distinct rhythm which you can see on the video. I think it will make a nice HPDE and school track.”
Beginning June 12th, the TSMP road course will officially open up with its first scheduled event, hosting the Porsche Club of America.
TSMP will also be hosting their inaugural Vintage Motorsports Festival, June 27th – 29th with both VRG and VSCCA groups. With over 200 vehicles racing throughout the weekend, it will be one of the largest events of the season. The weekend will include Formula Cars, Sports Racers, Sports Production, and the “Back in the Day” Car Show featuring race cars that ran at Thompson in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.
