Pepsi Night: Sunoco Modified Feature #2

Keith Rocco held off Ryan Preece for another win, sweeping the Sunoco Modified double header.

Full results

Rocco’s return to victory lane would not be short lived as he continued to run up front in the second Sunoco Modified event as well. Rocco worked his way to the top three with fifteen of the twenty-five laps remaining and engaged in a neck-and-neck battle for the lead with Ryan Preece, who claimed a victory in Bristol the week before. A daring dive-bomb with ten to go gave Rocco the lead and it was full steam ahead as he held off Preece to sweep the Sunoco Modified double header.

“I’ve been waiting all year to get that Keith Rocco and Ryan Preece battle and I got it tonight,” said Rocco after the win. “It was a lot of fun – We’ve had a fast car every week it’s just the cards never fell in our favor and tonight they did.”

Pepsi Night: Sunoco Modified Feature #1

The first of the two races saw complete domination by one of the best in the business, Keith Rocco, giving him his first Sunoco Modified win of the season.

Full results

The first of the two races saw complete domination by one of the best in the business, Keith Rocco. Rocco started in the top ten and worked his way up quickly to the lead, taking advantage of an early caution when Adam Norton, who had concerns during practice about the engine in his car, made hard contact with the turn three wall. Rocco raced his way to second with 23 laps to go and engaged in a neck-and-neck battle with Nick Ladyga for several laps before another caution slowed the field with 19 laps remaining.

Rocco would benefit from a great restart and never look back to claim the first of the two Sunoco Modified races of the night, and his first of the season in the series, holding off heavy hitters Woody Pitkat, Ryan Preece, Nick Ladyga and his own teammate Eric Berndt who rounded out the top five.

Following the win Rocco commented on his dominating performance in Victory Lane. “We finally got the car turning really good. It was turning a little too good. I was pretty free through the middle there. I was holding on for dear life trying to get a good run off the corner,” said Rocco. “It’s pretty awesome to win this.”

Full results

The Sunoco Modified Series saw a trio of familiar names run up front as Ryan Preece, Woody Pitkat and Keith Rocco finished first through third respectively with strong showings all around. Preece took the lead early while Pitkat and Rocco worked their way up from outside the top five and took advantage of their well handling cars and a few cautions to move their way through the field.

Preece said he used the opportunity to race in the Sunoco Modified prior to the Whelen Modified Race by trying different grooves on the racetrack and was happy to come away with the win. “I didn’t know which lane to go on the restart and as racers we try to play games. I just knew what was on the top and then on the bottom it was just a little bit of contact going into three there, and then I don’t know if it knocked the toe in but it just really snugged my car quite a bit there. I was happy we didn’t have any cautions because I know those guys were pretty good behind me – We’re just happy it went green to the end and we were able to pull that win off.”

Whelen Night Sunoco Modified 20/20 Sprint

Ryan Preece wins the first segement race, but Eric Berndt's victories in the second and third segments gives him the overall victory.

Full results

The Sunoco Modfiied 20/20 Sprint was a three-segment race which served as the penultimate event of the night and was the second one of these being held at Thompson throughout the 2015 season. The event challenged drivers to finish in the best position possible through two 20-lap and one 10-lap segments, earning fewer points the closer they were to the front. The driver with the lowest number of points after the three events claimed the overall win. In addition the first two segments acted as regular points-paying Sunoco Modified events.

The first segment saw the first big caution of the night to that point after a battle for the lead resulted in a five car melee when Keith Rocco caught the left rear quarter panel of Nick Ladyga in turn four after leader Jason Sundeen attempted a block, collecting at least three other cars in the process including points leader Woody Pitkat.

The incident worked to the benefit of  Ryan Preece who took the lead after the restart, after starting deep into the top ten. He would go on to win segment one while Eric Berndt finished second and Pitkat recovered from the mid-race incident to finish a strong third.

The field was shifted for the second segment, sending Preece to the rear of the field and while he had made his way to the top five within the first three laps Preece’s luck would run out when mechanical failure caused him to retire only a handful of laps into the segment. He would return for the third and final segment.

Pitkat’s luck would continue however as the seasoned veteran and points leader led much of the second segment, despite his involvement in the crash in segment one. Following a crash with four laps to go when Ladyga encountered more trouble, slamming the outside wall in a one car incident, Pitkat saw his lead disappear after teammates Berndt, who had been involved in an incident early in segment two, and Rocco took over the top two spots and never looked back. Pitkat would settle for third for the second consecutive segment while Berndt followed up his runner-up finish in segment one with a win, carrying only three points, one for his win and two for his runner up, into the final segment. Pitkat had the second lowest amount of points going into the final segment with six followed by Keith Rocco who had accumulated eight points.

The ten-lap final segment had Berndt and Pitkat starting on the front row, having accumulated the least amount of points and, while a daring dive to the bottom on turn 2 gave Pitkat the lead, a spin would bring out the caution and reset the field as it was at the start due to the field unable to complete a lap. The two leaders also made contact before the caution came out as the entered turn four.

Pitkat attempted another daring dive on the restart but was unable to pass Berndt, who ran away with the lead and never surrendered. Pitkat took part in a hard fought battle with Keith Rocco who took the second position on lap four. The teammates Berndt and Rocco would finish one-two once again and Pitkat would go on to finish third in all three segments of the 20/20 feature event. Preece finished fourth in segment three after he was sidelined for much of segment two.

Berndt’s point total of only four points was low enough to give him the overall win while Pitkat finished second with nine points and Rocco finished third with ten. Berndt’s victory proved to be the highlight story of the night as the veteran drove the #76 for the first time during the 20/20 feature. He said he was thrilled to be in victory lane and thanked his team for their hard work and for giving him a shot.

“It feels great you know. These guys put in a lot of hard work for the two cars they had here tonight,” he said. “We finished first and second (in segments two and three). What more could you ask for. It’s a great organization and I’ve got to thank them for giving me the shot and here we are.”

Sunoco Modified Feature

Cam McDermott who took home the hardware with his first win in the division after holding off a hard charging Woody Pitkat for the final five laps.

Full results

The opening feature of the afternoon was a 30-lap sprint for the Sunoco Modified division, which proved to be disastrous for a few heavy hitters in the series. The action started early when defending champion and series points leader Ryan Preece, who started near the rear in the 14-car field, hit the wall attempting a pass on lap two going into turn one. While Preece’s car continued the race it would not survive long, stalling on the track during a caution six laps in and requiring a push to pit lane. He would continue the race after falling several laps down.

Keith Rocco, racing the event as a precursor to his Late Model duties, found himself out of the race after failing to clear Kerry Malone out of turn four eight laps into the event. Malone, who had momentum coming off the turn, clipped Rocco’s right rear quarter panel, sending Rocco into the outside wall and ending his day. Malone would continue the race and would be collected in a wreck after a restart 24-laps into the race as drivers scrambled to gain position going into turn one. The troubles for Preece, Rocco and Malone meant all three of the frontrunners in the points had trouble during the 30-lap feature.

The drama continued when the race restarted after Nick Ladyga - who led most of the race to that point and was chasing his first Thompson win - was black-flagged after faltering on the restart and failing to maintain speed. While Ladyga would go on to finish fourth, it was Cam McDermott who took home the hardware with his first win in the division after holding off a hard charging Woody Pitkat for the final five laps.

After the race McDermott said he knew veteran Pitkat would race him hard, but race him clean, “He knows what we do and I appreciate him for keeping it clean. We ran well. That’s all I can say.”

Sunoco Modified 2015 Mr. Rooter Feature

Preece, who finished seventh in the Mr. Rooter Plumbing 125, faired much better earlier in the night during the Sunoco Modified Series feature where he claimed the checkered flag despite being penalized for rough driving during an early race accident in turns one and two. Cam McDermott led most of the early laps of the race, but much of the attention was on Preece and Keith Rocco who beat and banged each other until Preece nearly sent Rocco into the wall. Preece was eventually sent to the back of the field for rough racing during a lap nine caution which ended strong, and potentially top five, runs by Shawn Thibeault and Ed Pulio. Preece made his way to fourth place in two laps on the restart and eventually took the lead on lap eighteen.

A brief red flag on lap twenty-two bunched up the field but on the restart it was all Ryan Preece who maintained the lead and never looked back. Preece had to endure one more caution before leading the final seven laps on route to victory lane and extending his points lead in the series.

Preece said that it was a hard fought race and a good win but he did feel bad for contact that led to his penalty and caused damage to Thibeault and Pulio’s cars. “I’m just really upset how I got into Shawn Thibeault there. I feel bad for him and I’ll talk to him later,” said Preece. “Obviously that dampens the win right there, but (my team) gave me a great car. It’s really fun driving with them. They have great attitudes.”

Woody Pitkat finished a strong second while Rocco managed a third place finish and McDermott had to settle for a fourth place finish despite his early run at the front.

2015 Icebreaker - Sunoco Modified Feature

Ryan Preece used a late-race pass to slingshot past Keith Rocco on lap 69 and drive on to the victory in the Sunoco Modified 75 lap race Sunday afternoon.

Full results

Ryan Preece used a late-race pass to slingshot past Keith Rocco on lap 69 and drive on to the victory in the Sunoco Modified 75 lap race Sunday afternoon. It was a battle right down to the wire in a race that was plagued by 12 caution periods.

“We found something there on the bottom of the track,” said Preece about his pass for the lead.

Kerry Malone jumped to the front at the start of the feature, but contact in the rear of the field brought the race under caution before the field reached turn two. Malone held off Woody Pitkat in turn one to hold on to the lead when the green flag dropped once again. Pitkat and Preece rounded out the top-three and the front trio were all nose-to-tail.

Caution flew for a spun car on lap 10, but did not slow the pace of Malone who drove right back out front. Pitkat missed a shift on the restart and allowed Preece to move up to second followed by Shawn Thibeault. It wasn’t long, however, before caution was out again for a three-car wreck in turn four.

Preece won the race into turn one, but went high in turn two and allowed Malone to drive back out front. The carnage wasn’t over as a battle between Thibeault and Timothy Jordan resulted in the two in the outside retaining wall in turn three.

Preece and Malone went into turn one side-by-side but it was Preece who won the battle and came out the leader out of turn two, but the fifth caution was flown when a car spun into the infield grass on the front stretch. Preece claimed the lead on the restart, but it was Keith Rocco who took over the second position.

Cautions continued to plague the event making it difficult for any driver to make progress, but Rocco was able to do just that on a lap 15 restart when he took over the lead from Preece coming out of turn two. Preece attached himself to Rocco’s bumper and the duo pulled away from the rest of the field.

Rocco and Preece picked up right where they left off after a brief cleanup for an accident on the front stretch. Rocco remained the leader through a few more caution periods before a long green flag run finally developed. Thirty laps into the race, Rocco led Preece, Pitkat, Malone, and Nick Ladyga.

Rocco got a little breathing room at lap 45 when Preece fell back a car length, but it was only temporary as Preece was right back on his bumper by lap 50. Pitkat, meanwhile, was ten car lengths behind in third. The field strung out single file as the longest run of the day ticked off the laps and once again allowed Rocco to get a little breathing room from the determined Preece.

The race took a dramatic turn on lap 69 when Preece, who had patiently been riding behind Rocco all day, shot around for the lead. Rocco tried to reclaim it, but failed in his attempts. Preece drove on for the win.

Sunoco Modified Feature #1

Keith Rocco and Ryan Preece battle it out until Keith Rocco pulls away for the victory in the last few laps.

Full results

Keith Rocco proved to be the man to beat in both of the twin Sunoco Modified feature races. Rocco took the lead from Ryan Preece for the final time at lap 20 in the first feature, and took it away from Todd Ceravolo in the second one. In both races, Rocco went to the checkered flag unchallenged.

Tyler Chadwick took the early lead at the drop of the green in the first 25-lap feature, but caution quickly emerged on lap two when Todd Ceravolo spun in the middle of turn one and two. Chadwick held off Cam McDermott on the restart, but a multi-car wreck on the backstretch put them under caution before the lap was over. McDermott took the lead on the restart and held off a three-wide challenge in turn four to keep it at the line.

On the following circuit, Preece drove up on McDermott’s bumper before dropping to the bottom groove to claim the lead in turn three of lap four. Kerry Malone moved into second and attached himself to Preece’s bumper. Rocco settled into third, but soon inherited the second position when Malone blew up on the front stretch at lap 14.

Preece and Rocco brought the field back to green with a tight door-to-door battle through turns one and two. In the middle of turn three, Rocco pulled ahead by a slight advantage, but lost it to Preece when they crossed the line. The battle continued and the duo swapped the lead several times before Rocco settled in out front at the wave of a caution flag on lap 17.

Preece cleared Rocco on the restart to assume the lead, but Rocco drove back out front in turn four. Preece reclaimed the lead before the lap was over, but Rocco wasn’t done and drove back out front on lap 20. This time, however, Rocco opened up a five car length advantage – the largest over Preece for the night. Rocco continued to pull away over the last couple of laps and took down the victory in the first of dual 25-lap features.
