Barre, VT and Naples, ME — For the final time on a Wednesday night in 2022, Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park will roar back to life tomorrow, September 14. The .625-mile oval will play host to another round of action for the Outlaw Open Modified Series in the Tripoint Showdown 75, worth $5,000 to the winner. The event also includes double feature races for the Limited Sportsman (20 laps each), along with the Late Models, Mini Stocks and SK Light Modifieds.
The show will serve as the final laps for drivers prior to October’s 60th annual Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing presented by Budweiser, scheduled for October 7-9.
Wednesday’s Outlaw Open Modified Series race could be a showdown between Mike Christopher Jr. and NASCAR National Series star Ryan Preece. Christopher, driving for Tommy Baldwin Racing in the No. 7NY, has already been to Victory Lane in the Outlaw Open Modified Series at Thompson this season – winning the $10,000 to win event at the Icebreaker, and also the Nutmeg State 75 in June. Last time the series was on the track, Christopher bested track champion Keith Rocco and Preece across the line at the finish after 75 circuits.
Additional drivers who have run up front in the series so far this season include Ronnie Williams, Matt Swanson and Chris Pasteryak. All three are expected to return Wednesday to race for the check in the special event, among others.
On the local division side, the Limited Sportsman will look to steal the show with two, 20-lap races – one to start the night – and one to cap a full night of racing. In the hotly contested battles so far this season, names like Zach Robinson, Larry Barnett, Aaron Plemons, Jason Chicolas and Corey Fanning have been near the front of the pack. With two races on tap, both for points, the division only has three points events remaining before the 2022 champion is crowned.
Last time out, Woody Pitkat added to his wins list in the Thompson Late Models, as the multiple-time track champion was the first legal car across the finish line. This week, he returns in the Hartwell Motorsports No. 91 to try to do it again against the likes of Derek Gluchacki, Ryan Morgan and Brian Tagg for 25 laps of their own.
Thompson’s Mini Stock division has been the one of the most competitive of all, with multiple drivers visiting Victory Lane in the first races of the season. As the championship comes into mind, names like Kevin Moore, Jared Roy, Dave Trudeau and others will look for glory in Wednesday’s 15-lap race. They will be joined by the SK Light Modifieds, who will compete in their own 20-lap feature. Nathan Pytko and John O’Sullivan seem to be some of the consistent contenders at the front of the field this season.
Wednesday’s action begins when the pit gates swing open at 2 p.m., followed by the start of rotating practice sessions at 4 p.m. The green flag for qualifying is scheduled for 6 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 3:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $30 for adults, with those 6-12 just $10 and kids 5 and under free. Pit admission for adults is $45 and children from the ages of 12 and younger is $25. All tickets will be available at the track.
